@DeltaVTX Yep, and that is why trump won. People are sick of condescending buttholes telling them how to vote. Making vast generalizations while complaining about the same

They literally just have to run or pay for data centers and staff to edit and make sure the style is consistent, plus admin staff. That's it. Whole ass novels in actual physical format cost less than most single papers

Ehhhhhh Universities don't really share either. More than companies, sure, but it's very rare for universities to publicly host research data so people can check analysis, and accessing papers is still through the same publishers with insane paywalls

5:00 Ummm degeneracy pressure? I'm sure we've all heard of neutron stars by now. Pauli exclusion is in direct conflict here. Plus, it takes infinite time to reach the event horizon, so to speak of it as a one way valve isn't quite right either

As if the millions lost in the last century weren't enough...

It's called sciencism. People treating science like religion and pretending it's different because it's "secular" and doesn't involve a god. All the same social manipulations and fallacies

Write it for free??? Ma'am, we pay for the privilege of submitting, and then also have to pay to access the publication

It’s simple. It confers benefits, self ID is normalized, and so it’s a trend to self ID as something that confers benefits without actually suffering the downsides that those benefits are meant to ameliorate. It’s almost like policy should factor in human behavior and not pretend we’re all saints 🧐

OP, this is the problem at the rotten core of academia. Believing they're better than everyone else, they're on some path ordained by god, that they're modern day prophets

1:50 God damn people really act like they're above doing work. If you have to become a brick layer because we all find you the entirety of the funding of your existence is bullshit waste, fine! You should be disgusted with yourself for being a parasite of people doing things that are necessary, not beg them to continue funding your life. People get mad about billionaires, but good lord they actually employ people and produce goods and services that people buy What these people fear is being torn down from their ivory tower in academia, not actually hunger

Here's the problem. Publicly funded research is an important good. But in many ways, it's gone waaaaay over the line of what is appropriate, and academics have gotten very comfortable acting like they are modern day prophets in some ivory tower. So you'd have to be an idiot to not expect the rug being pulled out from under academia. Common people are sick of being talked down to by people who are being paid by money stolen from them. The theft can be tolerable if it serves the common good or at the very least isn't seriously problematic. In addition, goodhart's law has taken affect. Becoming a STEM person has been the life hack to get good money. But since it has been swarmed, the talent pool is necessarily diluted, people are there for the wrong reasons, and there's too many people who need work in science for all of the work to be important enough to spend the stolen money on

The bigger question is this: why do we even use journals aside from organizing publications for ease of finding? I'm always told "impact impact impact factor!" But so what? We've seen shit be cranked out by reputable journals, the peer reviewers aren't paid and stuff slips through cracks, you still have to have a skeptical eye. All it does is maybe filter publications so that it's not trivial to put out bullshit. That is what we are paying ungodly sums for
