  1. Ehhhhhh Universities don't really share either. More than companies, sure, but it's very rare for universities to publicly host research data so people can check analysis, and accessing papers is still through the same publishers with insane paywalls

  2. Here's the problem. Publicly funded research is an important good. But in many ways, it's gone waaaaay over the line of what is appropriate, and academics have gotten very comfortable acting like they are modern day prophets in some ivory tower. So you'd have to be an idiot to not expect the rug being pulled out from under academia. Common people are sick of being talked down to by people who are being paid by money stolen from them. The theft can be tolerable if it serves the common good or at the very least isn't seriously problematic. In addition, goodhart's law has taken affect. Becoming a STEM person has been the life hack to get good money. But since it has been swarmed, the talent pool is necessarily diluted, people are there for the wrong reasons, and there's too many people who need work in science for all of the work to be important enough to spend the stolen money on
