This would be a great test of what I think is happening. I think its surface tension driven. I strongly hypothesize that it wouldn't work in this case

It's pretty clear at 3:30 that most of the water is flung off the ball almost immediately. That leads me to believe that the ball is pulled by the water's surface tension/adhesion since the water wants to go straight. The ball deflects the water towards it and newton's third says that the ball will be pulled towards the water.
