As a physics student, we honestly use stuff like computers as enough of a crutch that our ability to just pop stuff off the top of our head is not so good as it used to be. And for modern discoveries, this use of computers is often mandatory, because of the insane complexity of the integrals in particle physics, or of many body quantum systems in condensed matter/material science, etc

Yes I can, because back then they also weren’t slogged down by bureaucracy. Getting the job done as quickly as possible was all that mattered. These days honestly the hardest part of science is dealing with the “support” staff

The real reason that there was still some uncertainty here is that they were under no illusions of fully understanding the nuclei. They used what they knew at the time and calculated the worst possible scenario, but there was still a chance that there was something yet to be discovered at that point

I wasn't confusing the planes. I'll give you an example of what I mean. What is the log of a negative number? This question seems just like the question, what is the square root of a negative number.

So what about logs and exponentials? That's still algebra.
