1:20 The force isn’t doubled, it’s quadrupled (assuming pressure is the same). This is part of why F1 cars will have super short stroke length. The drawback is more reciprocating mass, and more strain on the crank, which can be addressed with advanced manufacturing and fancy materials

15:30 It’s only weak because people talk a big game online and then don’t vote, either at the ballot box or with their wallets

7:50 Correction: cronyism places this large amount of power in the hands of corporations. The government has a lot of power to suppress competition in the form of regulations, permits, etc to increase the barrier to entry. The big guys can afford this, but the little newcomers can’t. People are sold by the government that these things make them safer and similar things, and they don’t care that new businesses have an increasingly difficult time springing up, because they don’t care to start a business, and the distaste for big businesses often spills over into disregard for small and new businesses. In short, it’s a culture problem, not a problem with capitalism. Especially since capitalism is a very broad class of economic systems

The problem I see with your analogy is that quitting smoking can be done cold turkey, but quitting modern society, returning to an agrarian lifestyle where everyone grows their own food would actually lead to quite a lot of people dying and suffering as well. A closer analogy might be alcohol addiction, because you can die from suddenly stopping that. We need to find a better way to live, not go back to the old way

Making something last 20% longer and 10% lighter is not worth halving the life of an engine or worse. Cool tech is cool and all, but making things last is good for consumers and the environment

2:00 That is ultimate tensile stress, at least as important for engines is ultimate compressive stress
