I don't think he said that. Just that the Europeans didn't make much of a profit. That wasn't necessarily because of over investment, rather their operating costs were not insignificant.

They traded foreign exchange and sovereign debt (sort of bonds) in the Middle Ages. TBH, the stock exchange of shares in companies didn't exist until the 17th century.

@ryanp987 It's a tough question. Indonesia and the Philippines were pretty Iron Age too a few centuries ago. But their geography allowed coherent borders even if the people couldn't necessarily talk to each other.

With a few exceptions, notably the Belgians in Congo and the Germans in Togo, the Europeans spent more in controlling and developing Africa than they could extract. From a financial point of view, it just didn't make sense. Which is why they left so abruptly in the 1950s and 1960s. The current French model for controlling their former colonies is much more profitable because the locals supply the bureaucracy and the neocolonialist French corporations can use the infrastructure for next to nothing that their colonial grandparents built at incredible cost.

pokezee king-wolf I merely said the Europeans didn't make money, for the most part. You said that they were murderous and cruel. The two sentences are quite compatible. The insult was unnecessary.
