  4. Unless your cells are out of balance. The external load cutoff doesn't know this condition so it continues pounding away at your battery until the low cell causes the BMS to shut off. Very hard to detect externally.

  5. And the manufacturers are very, very bad about specifying this. Just asked one about it yesterday and they kind of just shrugged. I think I'm just going to add a second precharge breaker in parallel with a resistor on it and just remember to turn that one on first when powering up.

  6. I recently had a router do something similar. In my case I believe some excessive power outages caused failed boots, which in turn caused it to revert one of the bootloader params (after 3 failures) and boot the factory flash.

  16.  @upnorthandpersonal  That was an extremely long winded way of saying they won't keep up. The "active" balancers in BMSs aren't nearly enough to keep up, and the inductive ones are also still not fast enough to keep up. The only thing missing was the time dimension which is the key point of the original comment, and there is no reasonable time dimension that one of these active balancers is enough by itself. This is a classic trick of the lead-acid guys to tell you that you did something wrong, but don't specify the literal correct dimensional value that you were supposed to obey. Hence you're always in the wrong, no matter what you do, because you didn't follow the non-existent guidance.

  17.  @OffGridGarageAustralia  The fault may be internal to the unit. Does it record uptimes? Or bootcount? On some OpenWRT devices there is literally a firmware variable called "bootcount" which counts failed boots and triggers an alternate boot action. If you have another one it might not be worth the bother unless you manage to kill the new one too...

  29. You want to obviously catch the cells when they're not in that flat portion, namely charging and discharging. I think the biggest advantage of an active balancer is to augment a balance charger that has a limited discharge capability (which it uses to balance). So for instance if a balance charger can only discharge 200ma in order to balance, it's faster and more efficient to let an active balancer do that work. Caveat: the voltage difference threshold that a balance charger starts balancing is usually less than the threshold of these active balancers.

  30. This has always bothered me about charge controllers. The BMS is doing exactly what it should be doing. If a charge controller can't handle that it's a design problem with the controller.

  37.  @upnorthandpersonal  It seems like you're going back and forth between an "it depends" answer, but when asked for specifics of what it depends on, particularly for implementing a process, you backtrack to "it doesn't matter because it's automatic". So it's like it depends on something that doesn't matter. Assume an 8s 280ah LiFePO4 configuration, and unbeknownst to you (because you didn't measure the cells because it's supposed to be "automatic"), and the cells are: 3.0, 3.09, 3.18, 3.27, 3.36, 3.45, 3.54, 3.63. In that order. Again, you didn't measure these so you didn't know because it's "automatic". Specify the parameters for your setup and what the outcome would likely be.

  38.  @upnorthandpersonal  The active balancers don't fire up until there's more than 0.1v difference between any adjacent cell. Each one of those cells is 0.09v apart from its neighbor. You also never specified the release delay time.

  39.  @upnorthandpersonal  Yeah that high cell is going to render the SCC point moot because you'll quickly be disconnecting it. OK, I didn't count the caps but if these transfer across the pack then that might work, except for that 3.0v cell may put the balancer in sleep mode (?). It's still kind of a touchy proposition that requires planning.
