There are plenty of "firsts" on offer: first to Mars, first to an asteroid, first to escape this solar system, first to experience superluminal flight, first to approach Alpha Centauri, etc, etc. Whether we have what it takes to achieve any of these things may hinge on something as simple as not engaging in a nuclear exchange with that madman Putin.
