Slings are actually pretty terrifying weapons. Helmet and armor are no guarantee for protection, as the stone or lead bullet is very heavy and can crush bone and dent armor, similar to a mace. The Balearic Islands produced some of the most skilled slingers in history and they were payed well for their service in many armies. The occupation of most of them before war? Shepards. Slings are cheap and easy to produce, stones are everywhere, and protecting livestock from predators from a young age is good practice. Trying to hit trees and rocks with their sling is also a good way for young shepard boys to while away the long hours of guarding their charges, while also improving their aim, which is rather difficult with a sling.
