  2. I didn't start using an adblocker on the internet until website ads started getting too obnoxious years and years ago. I intentionally didn't use an adblocker on youtube in order to support creators, until youtube started putting ads on creators and videos that weren't monetized and putting multiple long ads on videos so short that the ads had a longer playtime. I was willing to watch ads knowing a percentage went to the creator. Now when youtube is demonetizing people's videos for completely arbitrary reasons while still putting ads on them and deleting people's channels for no reason, and other such asshole behavior I will not support them. I haven't looked back since.

  3. Please suggest to this person to use Aisler, located in the Netherlands. Low tariffs, competitive price for small production runs, and free shipping to the US. Alternatively, they can use PCBCart (headquartered in China but has factories in Mexico to serve the North American market, which avoids tariffs), Camptech II Circuits in Canada, or OSH Park in the US for a relatively low cost solution. Edit: Yeah, selling something you don't have yet and spending the money before delivering the product is . . . very, very bad business.

  7. This reminds me why I will never work in 95% of sales jobs. You are basically a scammer most of the time. At best you are pushing a product that is subpar on people who don't need or want it. There are exceptions, but they are incredibly rare. Sales jobs in a store is a bit different. People are there because they want to buy something. You are, most of the time at least, there to help them, not scam them.

A lot of 3D printers allow you to connect to the internet as well as allowing you to update the firmware for additional features.This is the only one I've ever heard of that requires you to. This is scummy, anti-consumer behavior.

  16. Yup, the Ecotank line of printers is the best option for big brand printers since you can refill the tanks with any ink you want to. The only drawbacks are the price of the printers themselves and that you have to research any thrid party ink you refill it with, as some have issues like clumping.

  18. Things like this makes me happy that Amazon and eBay don't have much traction in my country. Smaller online retailers are pretty flourishing here, and if you're willing to make the drive to a larger city there's plenty of physical stores as well. That's not to say that I haven't used Amazon or even eBay, but they are a last resort that I rarely have to actually resort to. Amazon has so much garbage, and it can be difficult to find what you actually want. eBay has the same issues but worse, and has a user interface straight from a 90s website, and not just in functionality but even down to the look.

I kinda did a similar thing when a giant national dairy chain decided to relocate our small local cheese producer (a small but valuable employer in my municipality and a source of local pride) to halfway across the country as a cost saving measure. They are the largest producer of dairy in the entire country, but I don't buy a single product from them anymore. I know I'm not the only one either. Their products tend to remain on the shelves in our local stores. It's a tiny dent in their bottom line, but a few thousand people not buying their products probably equals whatever margins they saved by moving it. Probably helps that the quality of the cheese (still bearing the name of our town despite not being produced here anymore) took a nosedive afterwards. It was relatively small production volumes, at most a little over half a dozen tons per day, but when I spent some time working there I found out that we even had customers across the Atlantic (US and Canada) that ordered a few pallets of our cheese shipped over every year. I can't imagine that those customers kept up the expense and hassle of shipping cheese across the ocean when the quality nosedived like that.

If it gets posted and is visible if you immediately reload the page, and then disappears within 20-30 seconds of posting, then its youtube, otherwise it can be the channel owner deleting them. If you pay attention long enough you'll notice patterns in what gets deleted and what doesn't. Anything controversial or spicy has a high chance of being deleted, though it seems the tolerance varies from account to account (some form of shadowbanning). I can't post really long comments or replies, or ones that talk in too much depth about AI for some reason.

  34. Laptop batteries used to be removable by standard, just like cellphones. The watertight excuse would be a non-starter there of course, since no one expects anything other than a ruggedized military or industrial laptop to have any kind of waterproofing. It's not like phones need to have an IPX rating even. Yes, it sucks if you spill liquid on it or drop it in water and it breaks, but that's life. On a side note, I've had non-waterproofed electronics get submerged and function fine after being allowed to thoroughly dry. I've dropped an mp3-player in a stream and the only issue I had once it had had a few days to dry was that the battery was dead and needed charging and all the songs were deleted and I had to copy them over again. My best friend without noticing dropped his nokia 3310 in a puddle once, and then when he found out that he'd dropped it and went looking for it the puddle had frozen completly and he had to hack it out of the ice. A few days spent in a bag of rice and it was dry and just needed charging. I've spilled soda and things like soup on my keyboards now and then over the many years I've owned computers. It's impossible to get them clean even if you remove the keys. The keys will still suffer from getting stuck. What do I do? I remove the batteries and give them a bath or shower. 3 days to a week of drying later and they work fine. The keyboard I'm typing on had a shower and a scrub like half a year ago. (I would not recommend giving your keyboard a shower, especially if it's anything other than a bog standard cheap keyboard, but if it's been rendered non-functional due to keys sticking and no amount of gentler cleaning has helped it can sometimes be the only option.) And those are all things that aren't supposed to have any kind of waterproofing.

I don't generally have the issue with touching the edges of the screen because I don't have a wrap-around screen, and I also have a full case for my phone in order to keep the screen from getting scratched. However, the way I hold it would negate the issue regardless. The phone's back rests against the slightly spread three middle fingers and my little finger is cupped slightly towards me and supports the phone from below. This does mean that my thumb can't quite reach the opposite edge of the screen without stretching, or the top third at all, but that's usually not an issue and when it is I'm usually doing something that requires both hands anyways and I just use my left thumb for the left edge and the top of the screen. My brother solves the issue by having one of those attachable swiveling rings on the back that he just loops a finger through, freeing up the rest of the hand so he can access the entire screen with one thumb. My real problem is the tiny keys. I have big hands and big thumbs.

You know, if youtube had stuck to having 10 minute video uploads be free and longer requiring payment, and then started with the whole monetization thing, and then left the ads in the control of the creators, then it might have been beloved rather than constantly scorned as it is today. It might even have been profitable.

  39. This sucks balls. Not that it will ever happen to me, because I'll never be able to affort to buy a new car. If I had that kind of money it would go towards a house loan instead. My car, that I've owned for a decade, is a '98 Nissan Sunny, but it runs well. Yes, there's usually something that needs fixing each year, but it's a good car in general and I can, theoretically, fix anything that's wrong with it myself with the help of my dad's tools and knowledge. He's not a trained mechanic but he's been a car enthusiast his entire life and he has space where I can work on it and any tools I need. Wish he'd let me do more of the work though, he's one of those "Nah, don't worry, I'll do it," people. He also tries to teach me, but he's not very good at teaching. "See this [technical jargon]? You do [technical jargon] to make sure the [technical jargon] does [technical jargon]." No, I don't see it, because you are under the car and insisted that I not be under the car, so I can't see squat, I don't know what any of that means because you haven't explained it, and I have no idea how any of those unknows terms relate to each other because you haven't explained any of them except by throwing more unknown technical jargon at me. At least he tries, even if it's mostly pointless since any time I try to get an explanation out of him the explanation is just more technical term I don't know, instead of trying to explain their function in a more basic way. 🤷

This and other reasons is why I bought a Chinese spy phone with the same specs as the flagship phones of other companies (Apple, Samsung, etc.) but that cost between 1/4 and 1/3 of what phones with the same specs cost. Had it for five years, still works fine. Does it work perfectly? No. But having the same performance and close but not quite perfect functionality for a third of the price is worth it to me.

Adobe has no rights to your work unless you give it to them, and Adobe keeping it and refusing to give it back, even if they don't look at it or use it for machine learning without you clicking the accept button, can probably fall under theft according to the law.

  49. Thankfully, Steam revised it to the client not updating anymore. It will probably break some time in the future, but for now I'm not forced to downgrade to win 10 or get over my dislike for Linux. I tried switching to Linux, but just really hated it. Well, most likely I would actually switch completely to only buying games from GOG instead. I'd miss out on some games, but since almost all the games that appeal to me anymore are indies that likely won't be a problem. The real problem would be losing the 340 games in my steam library and all the money I spend on them just vanishing into thin air.
