Egyptian historical accounts makes the entire story of the "mad" king Cambysis, which was written in giant text on a mountainside by darius, the guy who likely killed Cambysis and confesses to having killed Bardyia, excuse me, the shape shifting sorcerer Garmata in said giant inscription, rather suspect. One of Cambysis' supposed big oofs that got him the title of "mad king" was the killing of a sacred bull during an egyptian religious ceremony. The egyptian accounts, only readable since the translation of hieroglyphics, recounts him as having fulfilled his royal duties during the ceremony, not as having committed sacrilege by killing the bull. The Egyptians, taking both their religious ceremonies and the recording of anything important to them rather seriously, are unlikely to have failed in recording such a fuck up. Most likely either Cambysis died unexpectedly or Darius, Cambysis' cup bearer at the time of his death, murdered him and then went back home and led a group of nobles in a successful coup against Cambysis' brother. Then Darius made up the lie about Bardyia having been murdered in complete secrecy by Cambysis, more "proof" of his madness, and having been replaced by a shape shifting sorcerer, Garmata, while Cambysis was away with no one the wiser. A textbook example of a coup followed by the fabrication of circumstances that obviously means that it wasn't really a coup. Poor Darius was just doing the right thing. Honestly.

  11. In the (Swedish) version I heard as a child, Urkon (lit. the ur-cow) was licking a bunch of salt and the salt-laden cow saliva dripped to the ground, turning into the first humans. Then we did the whole "be fruitful and multiply thing" that we humans do. Said cow stomping around created the lakes in Sweden. Well, some of them. Also, the sky is the inside of Ymir's skull, the ocean his blood, etc. The usual stuff. Also, Loki disrupted the builder by doing his "turn into a mare" thing and kept luring away his horse. That's how Sleipnir happened. As you do.

  12. It's understandable that you don't get the appeal of the struggle against hopeless odds since the whole point isn't winning. It's all about hope in the end. You know that they can't win, the character knows that they can't win, but the simple fact that they struggle none the less is admirable and the knowledge that the character is no one special in the vast scheme of things, that at the end of the day they are but one of the faceless masses inspires hope because you know that there are others just like them. Just as flawed, just as weak, and just as determined to struggle despite that. Tyger, tyger burning bright Rage, rage against the dying of the light . . .

  16. I wonder how many Babylonian revolts the Persians had to put down. Babylon . . . does not like to be a part of anyone's Empire. Ever. Not matter how well they are treated. It's why Babylon was razed to the ground at one point. The Assyrians were tired of all the revolts. Then they rebuild it because they really, really, really liked Babylonian culture and most Assyrians thought that razing the city was a bit much. When they had their own city states the Hebrews were the same, that's kinda why they were all brought to Babylon as slaves. The Babylonians were tired of putting down the constant revolts. Keeping an Empire is hard. Edit: Also, the killing of the Apis bull is considered propaganda spread by Darius I to legitimize his coup nowadays. This is most obvious in Egyptian records (which we couldn't read until recently) as they record the ceremony as being performed properly that year, with not issue whatsoever.

From what I recall, the guy sitting over the gate playing music was know for being extremely tricksy, so they figured it was some type of clever trap and they didn't want to play right into his hands. So they retreated. As for the South Sea Company, I'd recommend watching Extra Credits telling of it. It's . . . fascinating.

  22. Not all teachers work hard, give a crap about teaching, or are capable of teaching and should really get another job. Not that I've gone to college. Not that we have college here, our education system works differently. Hell, tuition isn't a thing here, all education is free unless you want to go to a private school. Not that you should ever be mean to anyone who isn't being mean to you.

  23. It's perfectly understandable that a lot of Greek polises remained neutral or allied with the Persians. Persia was well known for their generous treatment of conquered peoples as well as the vastness of their empire and armies. They were skilled diplomats and preferred to conquer with words rather than swords. Add to this that Greece didn't exist at the time. Sure, the various polises were all Hellenistic, but that's like saying that all of central and northern Europe is Western. That hasn't stopped Spain, France, and England from beating the crap out of each other over the centuries. Common cultural themes does not mean that you like each other and won't stab each other at the first opportunity. Edit: Very, very few empires know when to stop. Actually, based on Las Vegas, very few people know when to stop. "But I'm on a streak! I can't lose!" "Oh, I lost everything . . . I'LL BE BACK NEXT YEAR! AND THEN I'LL WIN EVERYTHING!"

  24. It should be Utgarth-Loki in English if you ask me. The "d" is actually a "th" sound and is pronounced the same as in "that". Also, this has always been my favorite story featuring Thor. Ten year old me thought it was hilarious when learning about it in school. Of course, in that version it was a bunch of giants tricking Thor, not an illusionist, so when Thor got angry about being tricked they couldn't poof into thin air . . . Even back then I thought Thor really needed to chill out and stop braining people just because they upset him.
