  1. This is why I disagree with anyone that says that space is the most hostile environment. You can take a walk in space with what's basically a balloon of insulating material around you, IE an EVA suit. Hell, you can survive being dumped into empty space naked and tied to a rope if you are pulled back in within a minute or three. If you were on a moon base you could literally take a naked sprint from one habitat to another if it's short enough to only require a handful of seconds, with minimal harmful effects. Something punches a fist sized hole in your spacecraft? A flat piece of hard plastic and some duct tape can fix it. Sure, it's not good enough for re-entry or for radiation protection, but it's enough to keep the air in. Tiny hole in your deep sea sub, or even a structural weakness, not even a hole? CRUNCH

  3. I am reminded that for a relatively small fee just about anyone can have their own microsat hitckhike into orbit. So yes, space really is open to hobbyists.
