Point about beautiful cathedrals: Many were built during times when the masses were mostly illiterate. That's why things like stained glass windows told the Bible stories, etc. Even the uneducated could memorize and understand from the images. Most of these "beautiful " churches people think of were Baroque or Rococo design. Wealthy families bought their pews, and often side altars. They demonstratedtheir wealthalso by showing off with gold leaf. The poor were sometimes not allowed into the building at all. They could gather outside and listen through open doors and windows. That's why the exterior were also very ornate, with statues, paintings, etc. If you ever have the chance to tour Germany, be sure to visit the Ettal, the doms of Munich (St Peters) and of Trier (decorated with massive marble statues and altars). Many times, the master artist who created the designs did not live long enough to see it. In Trier, each side alter took 1 artist an entire lifetime to carve.
