  1. I live in rural Michigan, surrounded by farms, and large dairy farms are nearby. NO - farmers cannot just endlessly pile manure anywhere they want, as much as they want. The EPA will get involved and make the farm build clay or cement lined pits where the manure must be kept to rot down. Leaving mass amounts on the land in huge piles contributes to run off polluting ground water. Where the volume cut off is, i don't know. But even when applying to fields, manure must be knifed or disced into the ground. That pile of manure carries a lot of pathogens and residue from Rx drugs given to the cows. Remember, manure attracts flies which can carry diseases to humans. And any odor has the potential to cross the blood brain barrier.
