Matt - hoping you can point me in the right direction... We also installed solar October 2018. We have a large ground mount system, (18 panels?) And are located in Michigan. My husband and I bought into going solar before we really researched it. It's a net metering system, the utility company is DTE. Unfortunately, my husband suddenly passed away just a few days after our system was installed, so I'm flying solo in trying to understand this thing. I'm looking for more resources on how my system actually works and how to adjust my usage to my best advantage. So far I've never had a zero bill or credit with DTE, but my lowest bill was $12. Someone told me DTE credits me at a lower rate than they charge me for my usage, but I need to learn more about how this all works. Can you please refer me to more resources? Thank you!

I am in Michigan. Please pay close attention observing how often you have truly sunny days. Yes, Panels can produce with ambient light, but not much. I have had my Panels for one year and have never seen them cover an entire month of my usage, by smallest bill was $12, and that was in July.

I am un Michigan. Generally, the black panels heat up enough to clean themselves free of snow, in a relatively short time. However last week I noticed my Panels were not doing that. We just had a snowstorm and I discovered the Panels were coated in ice, then 5 inches of snow, and then another coating of ice. Because of the layering, it was insulated and not melting. I rigged up an extension pole with a brand new, super soft micro fiber cloth, and basically just carefully pulled the top ice layer and snow off. The panels were still covered in ice, which melted in about an hour. Otherwise, my system has been maintenance free.

This is going to vary widely between utility companies. In Michigan, I don't believe I am charged a "processing fee", but the utility company credits me LESS per kw, and charges me MORE for energy I consume from their system
