Why was Luke and Laura such a cultural hit? Simple...
Luke was NOT the most handsome man - he was sort of a (pre-Michael Boulton hair ) geek. But a NICE guy, an emotional support to Laura, which is what really attracts women. So his "sensitive side" made him HOT and attracted the women. Then there were male watchers who knew Laura was way "too pretty" for the geek to get in real life, so those viewers lived vicariously through him. Is the Nice Guy finally going to finish first? Maybe there's hope for the viewers? Or is the soap opera going to turn real and Nice Guy gets dumped by Crazy Bitch, which the viewers can identify with?
Then there's the constant drama - back and forth - the original "we were on a break". The wedding was actually a let down, lol
Many other soaps followed suit. The best example is Bo and Hope from Days of Our Lives, also in the 80s. By the time that plot ran its course, I was willing to kill both of them myself! And Victor and (Nikki ?) On Young and the Restless, Kelly and (?) On Bold and the Beautiful, etc. I never became fan to any particular show, but had college roommates who structured their class schedule around their soap operas (too broke to afford a VCR)...
