Before 2020, the most prominent instance involving a slate of alternate electors occurred in the 1960 U.S. Presidential election. This took place in Hawaii, where there was a dispute over the winner due to a very close vote count. Initially, Richard Nixon was declared the winner in Hawaii, and the Republican electors cast their votes for him. However, after a recount showed John F. Kennedy had actually won the state by a narrow margin, a second set of electors, pledged to Kennedy, was certified. Both slates sent their votes to Congress, but by the time Congress met to count the electoral votes, the recount had been completed and the votes for Kennedy were accepted.
