He really didn't take the law into his own hands. He lawfully stepped in to protect himself and others from a persistent threat.

@berghoutcful Yes. My point is that taking the law into one's own hands usually means the person did something illegal, but in this case, he acted in good faith and didn't intend on killing the suspect.
