Not all boomers got a pension. You get paid more in the private sector than by the state/ military employers who give pensions. Taking that pay cut for a pension isn't a bad idea if you're bad at managing money. Somebody with more of a frugal, DIY mentality would be better off with a bigger check than a potential pension because they'd use only what they need while saving and investing the rest.

@Joe Are things so different now? Do old cash cars cost more than new ones? Are scissors illegal so you can't cut your hair? You actually have a big advantage over the boomers when they were your age because you can just YouTube how to cut your hair and fix your old car!
