How was this study done, though? How did they establish that the healthcare workers caught diseases despite wearing properly fitted masks, not at other times of the day ( lunch breaks) when they weren't wearing masks? How the hell did they find a hospital that wasn't using any PPE to use as a control group to compare the hospital that was using isolation gear against?

"adherence with interventions was low in many studies"-- Cochrane abstract

The 3M N95 fitted masks available in multiple sizes are thicker and sturdier than the Honeywell one size fits all N95's that have become more common now, and cheap knockoffs of the various types of masks were being made in 2020. If the N95s were completely futile there'd be a lot more TB among hospital staff.

@GoodnightJLH Yeah, I saw that. Looks like a real apples to oranges to turnips comparison. I think it's mostly a compliance issue combined with the viruses that were studied going endemic. If only a few cases of something exist, those patients can get put in isolation rooms and staff can use PPE and be protected. Once things are widely spread, even wearing N95 protection throughout the shift won't work perfectly because staff could even get infected with a virus while changing from the N95 they used in an isolation room into their regular N95 mask.

BinarySingularity, The authors of the study admit that compliance was low. This isn't a comparison study, it's a review of averaging together of other flawed studies. It proves not much except that mandates don't work when people don't comply.

Well, in the USA, we have CAPITALISM and LAWYERS. Companies don't like to get sued by customers who claim they got sick from an employee, so, while you're free to avoid health precautions, it can cost your job.

I've been using N95s with good results. Only one cold since 2020 and I caught that when I went for my physical. The thing is, nurses can catch diseases in the break room or in a non isolation room when they're not wearing an N95. I think the problem is people being half- assed about how they wear the masks, wearing N95 with one elastic loose, wearing medical surgical masks loose, leaving air gaps at the sides of their noses or having their noses out altogether, or wearing the thing for a neck warmer half the time. Pulling their mask down to talk to people close by, etc ...

@nickt2822 That's Trump's method! Appointee does well "yay, Trump", appointee does badly "you're fired" followed by "yay Trump"!

In the USA medicare only pays for limited ICU and hospital days. They don't pay after that. Whether the patient gets discharged home or to hospice doesn't make a difference in the amount the hospital gets paid.

Trump delegates and grabs the credit if things go well while making a scapegoat if things go poorly. Why doesn't the buck stop with the leader?

As far as "false promises /not knowing all the potential side effects," researchers are not psychic wizards. ANY new drug can have unforseen side effects. Sometimes something looks promising and doesn't pan out. That's just reality. If they had financial conflict of interest or falsified data, THAT'S what they should be accountable for.

@meyou4923 I trust my experience working in hospitals. Unquestioning "science worship" and never questioning the prevailing theory isn't the scientific method.

If it's a south- facing double pane glass window there would be a net heat gain during the day. Fabric (or plastic) curtains would insulate better than blinds.

RFK's giving speeches about how there was no ADHD, post partum depression etc. when he was a kid ...THOSE DIAGNOSES DIDN'T EXIST THEN! People were either "neurotic" or "delinquent"! The delinquents got reform school and the Neurotics got benzos, shock treatment and lobotomies! (Those Kennedies know a thing or two about lobotomies.)

RFK's making speeches complaining about the lockdowns that he conveniently forgot happened under Trump!
