@smithsmith9926 Those excess calories are coming from fast food and processed junk food for the most part, not lean meats, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. The USA has a lot of poor people that are obese while being undernourished.

Lots of obese people have protein/calorie malnutrition. They take in an excess of calories, mostly carbs, fats and sugars while not getting enough protein and vitamins. This is probably not what she buys when she's not being followed by a camera crew.

@smithsmith9926 Yeah, I think we have you beat on obesity. The USA territory of American Samoa is always toward the top of the list of the fattest places on Earth. A lot of it's due to the green revolution of the 60's and 70's during which science was applied to agriculture, shipping, and food preparation, producing an abundance of shelf-stable food. Former pres. Obama's first lady, Michelle, famously blamed obesity on the lack of fresh vegetables in urban convenience stores, however there's also a lot of obesity in rural areas, too. People just like tasty, convenient foods they don't have to make from scratch.

Don't buy prepackaged salads and individually wrapped slices of cheese, you're paying more for packaging. Switch to powdered milk. Just mix up what you're going to use as you go and it doesn't spoil.

Most likely not what she eats when not being followed by a camera crew. If she bought this regularly, she'd know precut fruit and vegetables and individually wrapped slices of cheese are a waste of money because you're paying for packaging. A lot of vegetables are cheaper canned or frozen. Fresh asparagus is one of the more expensive vegetables. She could probably have had a whole bag of carrots for what she paid for that little bunch.
