  1.  @mrbanana6464  Property owners pay PROPERTY TAXES every year on the buildings they own, (as well as income tax on the rent they charge). So the landlord is "renting from the state" and passing the extra expenses on to you.

  2. Rents would be higher if they didn't allow slumlords. Property values and property taxes go up every year. If mom and pop landlords can't raise rent to make up for it, they have to sell. This reduces the apartment supply and makes prices go up even more. Competition from vanlife and human doghouses ( AKA tiny homes) will force rent prices down. Either that, or the government will have to look the other way and allow coffin/ cage apartments like in Hong Kong.
