It's not about being " able" to retire, it's about losing your job because of no longer being physically able to work! Working until you drop dead is not a retirement plan. Save and invest now.

@DanDeLeoninthefield Gibney's 47. That's a Gen X. Tiny generation that rebelled against the Boomers. Do you have a laundry list of grievances against the Gen Xs too?

@AP-ym1lo You're a fascist. It's their constitutional right to vote. You're not even making the argument that they're senile, you just want to take their right from them because it impacts your pocketbook.

@gafjr That's right. The young boomers coined the phrase " never trust anyone over 30", now they're the old retirees. Millennials need to remember they're going to age, too. Many of them haven't saved or invested for retirement.

@Ludifant Sad that you have kids and are training them to cheer when Grandma dies. You'll be that old Grandma needing care one day.

@willsetchell4222 Boomers were brainwashed NOT to plan for the future by the youth pop culture of their day. They had songs about getting back to the garden of Eden and " fa La La la la la live for today". Anyone buying mutual funds, etc would have been seen as a square and a sell out and a counterrevolutionary. Investing itself was more expensive back then and had to be done through a broker. Like the Millennials and Zoomers, a lot of the Boomers were convinced that the system was about to inevitably fail and then a new era would begin.

Use the compound interest machine and the target date index fund machine. Customize with either the pre-tax (drop your bracket) or post tax ( tax free growth) option.

@hunnybadger442 Working hard is key, but you have to have the self discipline to save and invest. Successful people plan ahead and put something aside for that eventual unlucky event.

@swayback7375 Successful people save and have an emergency fund for when that bad luck hits. It's not that they've had nothing but breaks. Are you seriously arguing that the person who doesn't work deserves the same paycheck as the person who works two jobs?

@hunnybadger442 " Defeated by the enviable"? You mean by the envious, maybe? Enviable means a thing that people are jealous of.
1
@hunnybadger442 " Excelling in education"+ "lifetime of hard work" should add up to some sort of teacher retirement? Unless you cashed it in?
1
@hunnybadger442 Saving doesn't mean you got gifts and windfalls to provide you "extra" to make a nest egg for retirement. Saving starts with lifestyle. Buying less than you can afford. Living frugally. Planning ahead for "what ifs" .

@hunnybadger442 I can't advise you on family drama. You said you're disabled. I'd try to move to somewhere where what you receive in disability will put a roof over your head. You'll probably need some roommates.Focus on your health as much as possible.

@terrystevens3998 If you achieved CA politics nationwide, the rich would just leave the country.
