@thenerdgirl1 Don't buy a van unless you think you'll be living in it. You want a durable little used import sedan. Honda or Toyota. Maintain it yourself as much as possible. If it's just you, take the back seat out so it's lighter and gets better mileage. Leave for work early so you're not sitting in traffic wasting gas. If there's a grocery next to your job you can shop there before work and keep your perishable stuff in the work refrigerator until you head home.

@thenerdgirl1 Well, I'm not psychic to know how many kids you have, but 4's still doable. That's one riding shotgun and three in the back seat. You'd be AMAZED how much better the mileage is than with a van.

@thenerdgirl1 Still don't see how that adds up to $6000.00? Switch to cheaper phones. Never make phone payments. Just buy used off eBay and shop for low rates on data. Install a text over wifi app and use that at home (assuming you have wifi for a computer for the kids). If the teens don't like it, tell them to get jobs. Don't know what the minimum work age is in Canada.

So even if you blow $6,000.00, that's 2,333 into savings, plus whatever you get paid.

@thenerdgirl1 Another thing you can do is cut your utility spending. Heat or cool just one room of the apartment or rent house and everyone hangs out there. When it gets cold, warm the beds with reusable hot packs, hot water bottles or electric blankets. Make a tent over the beds with a piece of cord and an old comforter or two to retain heat.

@AquaMoonMaiden What "special training" does the store employee need to watch 8 self-checkouts? How long does it take to train them to swipe their badge and correct an item's price? And the other 7 cashiers that were replaced aren't going to be kept to stock shelves. One or two will, and the rest will be assigned to the unemployment office. That's not "simping". I'm not saying automation is "wonderful". I'm saying it's REALITY.
