The paparazzi stuff started way before the internet and bored people in the pre internet era actually liked it.

In the pre internet era there where not a lot of ways to get international recognition. the best way to do it was to become an actor or musician since everyone watched the same movies and listened to the same music. you either where so famous most people knew who you where or you where just an average person. that was only known by 10 to 100 people max nowadays you have youtubers with a following of a few 1000s or millions but the average person still does not know who they are. the their fans are spread across the globe.
