almost nobody owned a mobile phone in 1990 and they didn't have a build in clock or any display at all. but i will say that by the year 2000 they were becoming very common and had build in clocks so they certainly started competing with watches long before 2007.

@davidporeilly1 yea you are right because most phones in the early 2000s already had clocks and that is when they got very common by 2007 everyone had one for a few years .but in 1989 cell phones were a real luxury i think the cheapest one was 2000$ .if they were still uncommon in 1999 i don't see how that was even a factor for most people in the 80s you must be wealthy or got one from work . my dad had one briefly in 1995 but had to give it back and he didn't get another one until 2001.

i guess its because of the older generation being in decline. i am not old but when i was a kid i always wanted to have a watch because it was just handy i always had the very cheap ones. but even in the early 2000s so before smart phones most phones already had a build in clock so it got pointless quite a long time ago and it became a luxury item. older people like them for nostalgia and want the watches from brands they couldn't afford when they were young. but most younger people have no real interest in these
