I don't think being literate was a big deal because most people could not read and society did not expect people to be able to read but i think another similar problem was the language barrier back then every village had its own dialect and you did not have to go far before it turned into a different language and most people where not multilingual.

@allisonshaw9341 I am a polyglot but i only know modern languages a few years ago i heard old English and i could not understand anything apart from a few words but now a few year later i tried again but i could understand a lot more because old English had a lot more in common with Scandinavian languages than with modern English. But i think that back then you had a lot more dialects most of them where never recorded and are lost to time and you still had a lot of more unique Celtic languages and others. I am from Belgium and in my country you still have a lot of odd dialects that are hard to understand some could be considered a different language but in the past there was a lot more and people only spoke their own dialect.

@allisonshaw9341 Yea that is why is started learning welsh i heard the welsh speaking population increased by over 25% in the last 10 years at that pace there will be many millions by the time i am a old man And native American languages are very interesting and unique the only native American language i tried to learn is Quichua (runa simi) its from south America not the USA it is the biggest native American language it has 8 million speakers But even this one i rarely get to use or practice because they all just speak Spanish all the time so i am forgetting everything i want to learn other native American languages but i don't know how to learn them if i don't get to use it its not really possible for me to learn more than a few words i can only use most languages online not in real life.

@allisonshaw9341 Cool i don't know Cherokee or Scots Gaelic (but i have been learn Irish) and i only just started with welsh so i only know a few words but yea i like to do that too but i need to be careful because sometimes people do know the language but i did not know that and i think its great that i can understand a lot more languages it helps me a lot But languages like welsh are ofcourse not used a lot these days but its interesting and unique and its cool to know such a language but not as useful as a more common language but more large or medium population languages like Portuguese or polish or even Swedish have really made my life a lot better.

I wonder if the language barrier was a big problem back then they had a lot more languages in Europe back then i don't think anyone in France spoke English back then even places like wales would have probably not have many English speakers.

@ragnkja But did most peasants speak Latin i doubt it i think only the clergy and nobles could speak it.
