it was also in the 19th century when things were just very different with how slowly troops moved and with how rough life was even during peace time so people were more prepared for it .and if you were lucky your village just got ignored it didn't affect a lot of the country .if you knew a battle was going to happen in your town a few days in advance you could just walk away you had things like the telegram so information moved quite quickly compared to earlier wars but the solders mostly had to just walk or maybe take the train so you probably knew what was going to happen a few days in advance .
