@ThatWhichObserves yea but they used to say they wanted less people .but changed their minds like 3 years ago just go trough old books and media. it was always overpopulation this and that. you don't need to go back 200 years just 5 years or maybe 20 to be certain
24
yea we just keep changing search engines every 5 to 10 years its the circle of life .
18
After they said the birth rates where too high for the last 200 years. some still say they are too high
12
i love the 2000s
11
the new one is not good i hope reddit become less popular
9
Yea when you subscribe to a lot of things you will end up broke quickly
3
Yea but most people don't see their stuff its just running in the background

@braytongoodall2169 Quant has been censored for similar reasons they were forced by the French gov. yandex too but its about other things so you can search for things that we find controversial in the west but not what Russians find controversial.
2
@Bobo-ox7fj yea but i have to spend like 5 minutes setting it up since it never remembers my settings and its clunky .
2
Every time i started to get annoyed at YouTube i check out alternatives there are some good new ones out there .but if i check dailymotion it seems like they made every mistake youtube made but worse they even removed the comment section .its no wonder why youtube won the short video sharing format wars in the mid 2000s. these days youtube seems bad and its only popular because it has way more videos but back in 2005 youtube was truly the best video platform around and you can clearly see why they became number 1.
2
I am glad they don't i had a lot of issues with my Microsoft account. i already regret using my google account for so many things i am worried i will be locked out of a lot of things if i ever get banned from YouTube over my old comments. it would be quite annoying if i get locked out of my pc when the word sandwich becomes a super offensive slur in 2040.
2
i think a lot of people were caught off guard my the rise of twitter and Instagram and Facebook when they first came out a lot of people didn't see the point .most Japanese companies tried to make their own YouTube like sites or early streaming sites and browser gaming because that was technically impressive at the time. and with smart phones they thought most people would prefer phones with buttons again this seemed logical at the time .
2
yea reddit is hostile to people with poor english skills. here on youtube you can find a lot of stuff in other languages too and you don't need to worry about downvotes lowering your karma
2
yea right now its better than google but we got way more alternatives
2
They really need to move out of the way because their products are becoming so bad its making using the internet annoying. i don't really care about what ibm does. their old computers got replaced with better ones from other brands and thats it. i don't need to use their products and even when ibm was at its prime i didn't have to use their proucts
2
@kubo-svk790 Yea but you are not understanding what i mean .they are very important but i am not using anything they make directly. they make the things that are used to make the things i use. if there were competitors doing the same thing i wouldn't notice it .
2
at least compared to watching elsa gate and mr best selling them pepsi
1
yea but i also think before the internet they didn't know what people in other countries wanted especially when it came to video games their only interaction with the west was with business men born in 1920 who had no idea what they where even selling

People here are uncreative and didn't see a lot of thing coming nokia was the number 1 smartphone brand in the early 2000s but they thought everyone would prefer to use buttons and this was the opinion of most people even in America. but apple took the risk anyway and it was a success same with things like twitter or Facebook or Instagram the average European investor would have thought they would flop and not invest. but in America they took the risk and it was a great success most people here also start hating on you if you got a business idea and assume it will flop. same if you go back even further in the 70s most European companies focussed on mainframe computers because they didn't think anyone would want a pc and it was more profitable and safe .but if you look at what people did with these mainframes you will get why people thought that. some people knew about things like video games but investors in Europe didn't and thought people would only use it for calculations and refused to invest and laughed at people who suggested that people would use a computer for entertainment .a little later in the 80s the uk made a lot of great computers for the time that were much cheaper than what American companies were making. they were a success at first but they didn't have a long term plan .and every time they made a new computer it was not compatible with the previous one. so everyone just turned to ibm and apple the ibm and even the old apple 2 and mac could be expanded so while the original model was not great other companies could improve them. but these uk computers had everything hardwired and soldered and they would even sue companies who made improved versions of their hardware. also in the 80s half of Europe was communist so they couldn't do much and in the 90s and early 2000s they were too poor to capitalise on the early internet .and even now some of eastern Europe has issues .like there were a lot of small tech companies in Ukraine and Russia that were growing the Ukrainians are not doing well for obvious reasons and the Russians get banned everywhere and the Russian gov keeps making them censor while all the coders get forced into the army . speaking of conscription a lot of countries still have it including rich ones like Switzerland and Finland. i know some companies had like half their workforce conscripted these tech companies usually only got young men working there .in more low tech companies they got plenty of people in their 30s and 40s and 50s who will keep on working who already did their time. and i also think tech companies usually show up in big waves .you had a big wave in the mid 2000s with the rise of social media (like meta) .another one in the late 90s with the rise if the internet (like google and amazon)and another one in the 70s with the rise of the pc (Microsoft apple) .and even before that time with the many improvements in analogue and mechanical tech . but in the last few waves europe was often betting on the wrong horse or didn't see it coming on time. maybe when the next one comes we will be ready or at least another place like Asia .

@JBM425 There should have been an Exxon mobile cellphone.

there used to be a lot more things similar to reddit but they are abandoned and don't show up on google search often. reddit is the only mainstream site that has useful info in text form made by regular people .everything else is stuff like Instagram twitter youtube. but sometimes you just want to quickly read the answers and i like how reddit doesn't force you to log in to read posts. but i am sure they will start doing that like twitter and Instagram and Quora
1
They weren't always ahead but for a very long time at least
1
The Germans had some bad influence
1
the thing about ev's is that a lot of countries are trying to force them but i don't thin japan is doing that
1
yea duckduck go results are usually different from bing
1
Because we are forced to use windows.
1
just compare japan to the rest of Asia
1
Brave search is good too i really like the goggles feature
1
The google search results have gotten too crappy. at first it was just about controversial things but now if you google things it will always be some ecommerce or dictionaries or top 10 social media sites like twitter or Instagram or reddit. you almost never get results from minor forums or blogs even if the big sites don't got what you want but the small ones do. but unfortunately while duckduckgo is better than modern google now its still way worse than google 10 years ago
1
That was what Microsoft's original roots were. they sold programming languages
1
I hope so we need new tech companies
1
The only reason china isn't using American stuff is because they are arch rivals
1
Dr.Kay_R it has way higher population density size isn't everything look at Canada
1
@Woolong-ql1jh at least when it comes to internet related things like youtube its hard to compete with free and you need many users that won't switch over even if the original platform goes down hill
1
yea a lot of people now would rather not use the internet than try something new what happened ? back in the 2000s when a tech company went bad everyone left and used something else but it seems like after 2010 nobody wanted to try new stuff
1
a lot of lemmy has similar issues to reddit unfortunately
1
We need new things and companies

my first laptop was a Toshiba and i hated it because it would break often. in retrospect it was probably because me and my sister were reckless teenagers i asked someone in high school in 2010 what brand was more robust and he told me asus. the laptop lasted about as long as my Toshiba but the Toshiba would break more often but was repairable while the asus laptop only broke 2X in the time i had it. back then i didn't have a lot of free time and this was before smart phones were mainstream so it was my only way to get online. so having to wait a few weeks to get it fixed was annoying so i considered the asus laptop a great improvement. but as i got older and more careful and didn't have to share it with my sister anymore the laptops kept getting more fragile. and they would never last for more than 2 years no matter what but the last 2 only lasted 6 months because the power cable plug kept falling out of the laptop and the battery stopped working it was so bad because at east after 2 years technology had improved and i could buy something cheaper and more powerful .but in 6 months time there wasn't even any technological improvement so i had to buy one with worse specs . after that i got an acer that worked well for about 6 years when i had an accident with a bowl of soup it probably would have still worked today if it wasn't for that moment. i wish i stopped buying asus laptops way earlier. i now don't own a laptop because i no longer need to move around much.

Asml is just an industrial company i think European companies lack creativity so while the make good products. they stick to things they know and just trying to make better versions of things that already exist
1
@valentijnrozeveld3773 yea but they don't make consumer products .and if asml was replaced by another company nobody would notice. they are about as important as the people who mine the copper .important for sure but i don't really notice it as a consumer. but with something like a website or operating system you can really tell who made it .
1
@valentijnrozeveld3773 but I mean if they get replaced by another company
