You are right: there is a reason. It is the lie perpetuated by the Catholic Church that Jews killed Jesus. The first Christian emperor, Constantine, immediately ( arpund the year 330) introduced laws that would make Natzis proud: a non-Jew was forbidden even to have dinne with a Jew, let alone be friends, date, or marry. The lie was rescinded by the Catholic Church only in 1960s. The Orthodox Church still actively promulgates that lie.
So Jews were hated as Christ-killers everywhere in Europe until the Enlightenment. Fewer and fewer people attended Church during the Enlighyenmrnt, and it felt stupid to be offended for Christ by those who no longer believe in Christ. So the hatred, which was deep-seated by then, needed another reason. This is when Jews became a race and the word anti-Semite, spoken by scholars with pride, was invented (around 1880, it was addressing only the Jews, not the Semites in general). It was this development that paved the way for the racist hatred of the Jews, which culminate in the Holocaust by the Natzis. Natzis were not Christian: they were rabid socialists who hated religion and capitalism.
In Russia, the same racist hatred is on the increase today.
