It is gratifying and refreshing to see a true Russian patriot. Professor Pivovarov is too hard on himself, however. Has the Russian intelligencia EVER performed its duties well? In the 1800s, it became increasingly dissatisfied with the system, but what positions did it take? Some were concerned with illiteracy and thought that going to the people ("v narod") was best. Others focused on the overthrow of the monarchy without thinking much about what would happen after they succeed. Marxist like Lenin and socialists of other varieties, in particular, had spent hardly a minute thinking about how a socialist society would function. Practically all of the intelligencia, as far as I know, rejected the accumulated experience of mankind and decided that constitutional monarchy and democracy are not suited for Russia: Russia has to find its own path. Well, it's been observed many times that the fools learn from their mistakes and the wise learn from the mistakes of others. Acting like fools, the intelligencia rejected the Western experience --- merely because it was Western. Under all the polemics and philosophically sounding words lied a very simple, centuries-old Russian chauvinism. Intelligencia debated everything except for what had already been proven to work -- a parliamentary republic, whether with or without monarchy. Nothing good comes out of foolish debates, of course. After a century of nonsense, the Bolsheviks took power and drenched the country in blood. The mob rules when it has no leaders. Russian intelligencia has never performed its duties (noblesse oblige), to a large extent because it has been, and still is, ill with the diseases of racism and chauvinism. Please don't be too hard on yourself, Peofessor. You personally are doing everything you can. Like everyone else, however, you need help but not getting much of it from the rest of the Rossiyskaya intelligencia.

The look in the faces of people around the Abrams told me more than dozens of articles, as did the clips from the Russian television.
