  1. The true successor of Rome was the Holy Roman empire. Some of these midwits forget that Rome is in ITALY, which was under the control of the HRE. The Pope crowned him thus, the Pope was the successor to the Pontifex Maximus, giving Charlemagne both the geographic and historical and religious claim. Constantinople was never Rome. They even called themselves Greeks, and Greek was the primary language of the east NOT Latin. They especially weren't Rome after they got conquered by the Ottomans! So Charlemagne also has the linguistic aspect of the claim, as well. Some of these..."historians".... get convoluted in their own little worlds.
