Something I have found that works VERY well to catch bullets without deforming them is snow. Shooting into a snowbank, then when it melts you are left with near to or pristine projectiles with only rifling marks on them. Its kinda cool. I know it works with 7.62 and smaller and about 3' of snow.

@whitneydylan1 When I was stationed in Wichita Falls TX, it snowed and shut the place down. It was only enough to turn the grass white, but it was still snow and everyone freaked out. As it happens snow works real well from Kansas on up north.

@whitneydylan1 I was not disagreeing with you, I am amused at how people in the south react to snow. Particularly since it has been snowing here for the last four days.. not real heavy though, only about 8 inches out there.
