@teslasnek I'm a gearhead who lives in the north, I'm getting all my vehicles off gasoline, but not going EV. Which Tesla did you get, and roughly how much did it cost?
The reason I ask is because I like to go as fast as possible for as little cash as possible. Thats why I like big engines, very high compression, lightweight vehicles, and sometimes forced induction. My cost to produce fuel is between 40 cents and a dollar a gallon, it works great with boost and high compression, the bonus is pretty much anyone can make it themselves.
Making energy myself is why I started this fuel/food/electricity project in 2007. $5 for 87 octane was too much for me to afford. Speaking of stationary power, I want a Prius or another hybrid to use for exactly that.
People think when you start running ethanol that you are some tree hugging type, but they do not want anyone running that either. I make it from cattails and tree sap. We can use lots of waste items to make fuel, like stale bread and waste paper, so its not like we all need two acres of corn.
My summer daily driver runs mid 11s around 120mph with a $4000 engine I built for it. Since its a 1965 GTO the really bad aero limits it to 17mpg mixed city/highway with a 455 and no overdrive. I have a Tremec 5 speed ready to go in when I get the rest of my manual transmission parts from the family farm, that should help the mileage a bit. Its one of the vehicles I have built to drive and enjoy. I have about $15k total in it, after rebuilding it from a rolling shell that was very rusty when I got it in 2008.
The 70 GTO got 20mpg mixed with an old Qjet on its 455, better aero with the 70 than the 65.
Only one vehicle I have has a somewhat expensive engine in it, but its destined to make around 2000hp with 20psi. The rest of them range from high 12s to low 9s in the quarter, and I can drive them around on my home made fuel and E85 on long trips and cost less than $4500. I can build a ten second street car for about $5k to $8k without a power adder using these old Pontiac engines.
I've found that making electricity is the more expensive form of energy to produce yourself, and it has requirements to use it. Thats why I went with vodka fuel. Simple, cheap, effective, and the fact its very clean burning is a bonus to me.
