In 1989 I was stationed in Frankfurt Germany, at Rhein Main AB, the prime target/goal if the Russians came around looking for the rest of Europe. My normal job was Air Cargo, loading planes, building pallets and such. My squadron liked to 'voluntold' me for things, so I ended up a Security Police augmentee, on the CIPS/Shelter team for my squadron the base decontamination team, and eventually the shelter team for the Security Forces squadron. As a result I was in NBC (nuke-bio-chem) defense training every month for one or the other. I could single handedly run the nuke proof shelters if I was the only one who survived, all of us on those teams were trained to do that.
I grew up on a farm with severe allergies to grain dust, wheat, corn, milo soybeans, hay... any of those can stop my breathing in minutes. So I lived in a gas mask most of the time, especially during harvest. These days I paint the old cars I build, and I am hypersensitized to isocyanate, which is in paint activators, if vapor touches my skin I am unable to breathe for weeks, its much worse if I breathe the stuff. I have to dress up like I did in the military for chem exercises when I paint a car, so I can breathe and function any time I paint a car. I am probably going to get a supplied air system that filters air and pumps it to my mask through a hose. I cant be exposed to it at all, so its very much like an NBC environment.
Lets say my experience and training is EXTENSIVE.
The MOST important thing for MOPP/NBC gear is the mask seal, without a good seal, you're not long for this world in an NBC environment. Cloth and paper, a little bit of distance, they do NOTHING. Filtered air in a building is the only way to go, because a chemical agent or biologic, and Alpha and Beta radiation (particulate) can be spread around a facility without filtered air. The fast way to the ER for me is to rely on a piece of cloth or paper rather than a proper gas mask with quality filters.I have to change the filters when I paint a car, and we had to change the filters for the shelters when certain agents were used.
The idea that a paper or cloth mask will do anything but virtue signal is ludicrous. I don't get colds or the flu, and never got the charlie one niner because I am not in the habit of touching public items like door handles, then touching my face, eyes, nose etc. That is how most biologic agents are spread, via surface contact, some are airborne and you can breathe them in, but most of it is contact.
We live in a soup of microbes floating around in the air with us, and we are immune to the vast majority of them. A piece of paper or cloth over your face has no seal, so the air you breathe mostly goes around it, not through it, and even if it goes through it, well its not filtering a damn thing.
Biologics are the most difficult to defend against, because they are also spread through vectors. A vector is another living organism, rodents and other vermin, dogs, cats, people.. whatever. Let one infected thing in, and the whole shelter is compromised. Kinda makes what Whitmer, Cuomo and others did with nursing homes appear in a different light, does it not?
As they came out and had different mandates and directives, I was aghast at some, and amused at others. Its like they had no idea what the hell they were talking about, or they were outright knowingly lying to all of us. I think its a mix of the two. Nefarious incompetence lets call it. Any time I would say any of what I have written here, it was removed or some virtue signaling ignorant type would chastise me and claim I didn't know anything because I am not a doctor.
I knew about the anti virals like iver the mectin from my military time. I know vitamin D helps along with other things they told us not to use. From my perspective it looked as though they wanted it to be far worse than it was, and made it out to be even worse than that, when it was not much of a big deal.
