  1. Consider this: Like humans, demons go bad. Sure, bad to begin with, but like a narcissist as long as they have worshippers they will be occasionally benevolent. But all the old religions were pushed out, trapping them in a limbo state. Probably became old and malevolent and no longer seeks to grant wishes and trick people. Just wants to cause harm. Saw his one chance and took it.
