  1. China's SMIC has had capability to make 7nm for some time -- the question was if it could be done efficiently and cost-effectively at scale without ASML's EUVs. Of course, China lacks native chip talent and this was all made possible by former TSMC engineers, such as SMIC's co-CEO, Mong-Sang Liang, from Taiwan.

As I said, China's illegal subsidies, in international lingo it's called Local Content Requirement, or LCR, is one of the two prohibited subsidies under China's WTO obligation. In this case, since China's discriminatory "purchase subsidies" were based on this practice, all of China's consumer subsidies are effectively illegal.

  18. It's difficult to support this when these truckers gross $10K-$20K and still net on average $4,000+/month after various fuel subsidies. Sure, it sucks that the fuel cost has risen so much over the past 1-2 years, but that's affecting everyone, not just these truck drivers.

  19. TSMC's fab completed in Japan is a legacy 28nm node. TSMC announced that they would also build a cutting edge 3nm node, but it won't be ready until 2026 and it's mostly paid for by the Japanese gov't.

  22. No worries. In pre-2020, the Chinese gov't forced all foreig EV OEMs to buy local Chinese batteries 25% more expensive than foreign in China. There would be no CATL or BYD without gov't protectionism. Europe is learning fast from China.

According to WSJ: ... China requires auto makers to use batteries from one of its approved suppliers if they want to be cleared to mass-produce electric cars and plug-in hybrids and to qualify for subsidies. These suppliers are all Chinese, so such global leaders as South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd and Japan’s Panasonic Corp. are excluded.

  35.  @olderchin1558  : There is no ban on older generation lithos. China accounts for less than 2% in manufacturing equipment -- everything gets imported. SMEE's own most cutting ege node is 24/28nm and the company plans to make those lithos later this year with parts and tech gathered from the declining Japanese DUV equipment industry. Packaging/Assembly/Testing are done in China b/c of their relative low-tech & high labor/capex intensity. There is nothing new about China's emerging fabless business -- and apparently Cambricon is allowed to use TSMC's 7nm. None of these are proof that sanctions are somehow allowing "uncompetitive" Chinese companies to survive or mature.

  36.  @TrendyStone  No. Most key components such as cameras & sensors mainly come from Sony in Japan. South Korea makes OLED displays, DRAM/NAND chip. Apple, Qualcomm, Skyworks make and design SOC, wireless baseband, PM chips, which in turn are fabbed at TSMC in Taiwan. Those roughly account for about 90% of iPhone BOM (Bill of Materials).

I'm not trying to say that Chinese are stupid or dumb, it's just that you can't just short-cut to decades of accumulative knowledge, training, and trial-and-errors in chip making and intracate supply-chain. 1. More like 15+ years if you account for that fact that China would not have any access to EUVs for that long at minimum.

  47. - Taiwan accounts for over 60% of all logic chips produced globally - South Korea about 75% of all memory chips. - China's chip production by domestic companies is only about 10% + foreign companies (eg, Samsung, LG) another 15% = 25%. - the world doesn't really depend on China's chip industry -- they are still way behind. Their most advanced processing node is 14nm. They announced 7nm last year, but not much is known and is much smaller in production.
