  1. No worries. In pre-2020, the Chinese gov't forced all foreig EV OEMs to buy local Chinese batteries 25% more expensive than foreign in China. There would be no CATL or BYD without gov't protectionism. Europe is learning fast from China.

  2. No. The EU already filed a WTO complaint against China's illegal EV policies back in 2018. This is a follow-up to that and the EU initiated the investigation ex-officio without any complaint from industry.

These suppliers are all Chinese, so such global leaders as South Korea’s LG Chem Ltd and Japan’s Panasonic Corp. are excluded.

  9.  @antihypocrisy8978  foreign EV makers's ability to make EVs and receive subsidies were conditioned on not only on trasfer, but also on use of local batteries. As said earlier, the antisubsidy probe is a follow-up as the EU couldn't demonstrate "injury" to local industry until past 2 years ago as Chinese EVs hit their shores. China makes mostly low-end LFP -- they are likewise mostly deployed in entry-level, low-range EVs in Tesla, MG, Volvo, etc, etc. Tesla's Long Range / Performance models for isntance are made by Panasonic and LG.

  12. The EU OEMs were the main victims of the Chinese gov't economic coercion to push local battery industry. I'm not surprised that the EU is working on Anti-Coercion Instrument to deal with China's future abuses.

  13.  @MJ-revered  Not western companies, just the Japanese/Koreans. The Korean company, LG, has the largest battery tech patent portfolio, followed by Panasonic, Toyota (mostly in SSB), Samsung, etc, etc.. This is one of key reason why China focused so much on LFP -- largely neglected because of its inefficient. LFP core patents were all soon to be expired and that allowed China to export EVs patent-free. CATL only recently started investing heavily in R&D after years of stealing from Korea and Japan. And likewise, most Chinese battery patents are "application," not yet "granted" -- meaning they are new patents.

  14.  @林振华-t4v  BYD unlike CATL is actually a legit player, having developed and manufactured LFPs for well over a decade. BYD makes better LFP than CATL.. everyone else is better than CATL in high-nickel batteries.
