@chinggiskhan6678 : that was a sarcasm. China is obviously freaking out over America's sanction. And they should -- China depends almost entirely on imported talents and supply-chain for what little they have now and that door is now closing. They still don't have their own indigenuous talent or experience.

@ASK-ko9qx : LOL! China's most advanced lithos are made by SMEE and they just announced their first 28nm early this year. And the sad part is it's not even based on their indigenuous know-how -- most parts and expertise come from Japan's declining DUV industry. SMIC's manufacturing equipments all come from the US/Japan -- this is not surprising considering that TMSC also depends almost entirely on foreign supply-chain for manufacturing chips. Lastly, 40+nm processing is mainly for your refrigrators, TVs, and air conditioners, not for datacenter/smartphones/AI, etc.
2
@ASK-ko9qx : there is no "indigenous" -- the Taiwanese engineers running China's chip industry are not "indigenous." China can't make jack without foreign engineers or manufacturing equpments. LOL

Sure, it's largely thanks to Bill Clinton in the 90's, much of America's key space/rocket technologies were transferred to China. China had no break through in space technology until 2000's and, without the Clinton/Gore's open China policy, China would have never dreamed about going to the space.

Actually it is quite possible. We aren't talking about making illegal copies of MS Windows or iPhones. ASML for instance makes only about ~50 lithography machines per year and cost up to $200M. Most semi conductor equipments aren't that costly, but they are heavily specialized and controlled.

@chillilover8345 : >>.. going high tech and catching up ASML is just a matter of time Sure, in about 20 years, China might catch up with ASML's EUV tech currently in use. I remember how Japan was once thought to be unstoppable back in the 80's and 90's. Unlike Japan which quickly surpassed American counterparts in a relatively short time, China is yet to get there. China still doesnt' have indigenous chip talent of their own -- take for instance SMIC's 7nm. The man behind SMIC's 7nm and 14nm is Mong Song Liang, a fomer top TSMC engineer -- ie China still has to rely on import talent and supply-chain.

@huas5350 There probably won't be one without nVidia.

@KayyHong : China isn't really outcompeting anything. They are still in the bottom wrung of manufacturing supply-chain. Take for instance semiconductors, the vast majority of high-value, high-tech design and chips manufacturing is done in the US, S. Korea, Taiwan; China's role in the supply-chain is mostly in low-value, low-tech assembly/packaging/testing. I know there are very uninformed Chinese who think China makes all those chips in the iPhones, etc -- China accounts for only about 8% of all chips produced globally; the country is the largest importer of chips by far. The same goes for shipbuilding -- much of their orders come from either the gov't or domestic companies for low-value bulk carriers; the majority of lucrative high-value ships are built by S. Koreans.

And China has nothing to worry if they are really that competitive.

@chinggiskhan6678 : LOL China is freaking out b/c they know now they are screwed. China aint' got anything and once the desperate Japanese and Taiwanese engineers leave the country, it's all over.

SMIC's 7nm is a DUV based process and highly expensive & inefficient. Intel's 10nm is roughly equivalent to TSMC's and Samsung's 7nm. Samsung also just released 3nm and is in risk production.
1
@eklim2034 : You mean China borrowed a lot of Japanese's DUV parts and engineering expertise to build their first 28nm (SMEE)?
1
@Matthew-rp3jf : Well, it's cheaper than building your own fab, but not cheap relatively to what everyone else is charging in the custom foundry business.
1
@kushagravlogs5627 : Sure, and China already has 1nm chip making technologies with their own lithograph tech that surpasses ASML's EUV. LOOOOL!
1
@MrYatesj1 : but China is not Taiwan, so with that China is still freaking out over the US's sanction.

@mooboo6603 : Sure, the CCP building better world together by suppressing and whitewashing the Uighers, the Tibetians and other ethnic minority groups. Once they are done with the internal enemies, they are going to achieve peace by claiming all near territories as their own in the South China sea, the borders with India and Japan! It's all about peace!

You are so right. All they really have to do is force Apple to move out of China and effectively stop importing iPhones/iPads from China.
