  1. No the AD1 was designed by Ed Heinemann to fill the same role.

  2.  @None-zc5vg  the design was finalised overnight, but Heinemann and his team had been designing a replacement for their less than sterling BTD-1. Heinemann had been lobbying the Navy to cancel the multi-seat BTD-1 and allow them onto submit a new design the XBT2D-1, which was later redesignated the AD-1 (or more fully A1D-1), which was designed to the same specification as the AM-1 (originally designated the BTM). The AD-1 was essentially a single seat version of the BTD which had been developed from the XSB2D-1, but with an uncranked wing and a traditional tail-dragger configuration. Heniemann had asked the Navy for 30mdqys to put in the new design submission but the Navy only gave him to the following morningba 09:00. 3 hours later the BTD-1 was cancelled and the AD-1 was born. The time taken by Martin to sort out the AM-1's handling and other issues were just what Heinemann and Diuglas needed to perfect their design.
