  1. Buckingham Palace was originally owned by the Duke of Buckingham who took his title from the town of Buckingham. The Blenheim was named after the battle in the Dpanish Warbof Succession at which John Churchill, the 1st Marquis of Marlborough, lead the Grand Alliance of England, Scotland, Austria, Prussia and the Dutch Republic in victory against the French and Bavarians. The Beaufort was named after the inventor of the Beaufort Scale, rear Admiral Francis Beaufort, a man and certainly not a stately home.
