  3.  @SteamCrane  yes they can, but the US Army has never succeeded in doing so. Even at the height of the Cold War, in 1961 when they tried to buy a version of the A4D-2N, the Fiat G51 or a version of Northrop's N156. This programme forced the USAF into providing close air support aircraft to the army.
