@slippingsnake no country can join if they have contested territory. And ukraine does not have any contested territory. All territory is officially ukrainian following international law and UN agreement. They just have invading troops on their territory. This could create some grey area with loopholes if they really wanted to. But i don't think most nato members are wanting to straight up start sending troops the moment ukraine joins.

@slippingsnake support has been accelerating non-stop since the start. Democracy simply takes time when faced with unexpected situations, but once things are worked trough things can move quickly.

@warrenreid6109 ukraine isn't recieving support from nato either. Theynare recieving support from nations induvidually. Some of them are also nato members.

@ADobbin1 if ukraine kicks russia out of ukraine the issue is solved. All territory is legally ukrainian, no matter how much putin disagrees.

China put them in the very cold friendzone already. And india is just friends as long as they get good deals on resources. Iran seems to be their only BFF left.

@sardonumspa6033 ukraine will only recieve more support as time goes on. Ukraine will be able to defeat russia long before fatigue could set in. Which is a silly asumption in itself, everyone is aware that giving russia a single inch will simply result in another conflict a few years later. The only way to solve forever war is to end it once and for all.

@devilsolution9781 ofcourse it is. Time will only increase the capability ukraine recieves. Once ukraine recieves propper western air capability russia is screwed, and it's about to happen sooner rather then later. It just takes time to align political interests when dealing with so many nations who all have their own politics.

@ADobbin1 the nato treaty states territorial disputes. And the territory isn't disputed. It is internationally recognised to be ukrainian. And the legal validity of the transfer of crimea to ukraine is also not in question. So technically nothing would stand in the way of joining nato. And it would be asumed russian harrasment would stop after ukraine joining since the situation changed and russia would have to revise it's risk assesment.

@greenwave369 ofcourse, but there are lots of political issues with doing that. Sending increasing capability to ukraine in the end solves the issue in a way for which it is much easier to gain political momentum. That's just the issue with democracy. Nothing is straightforward or easy.

@ADobbin1 just saying there are all sorts of possibilities and loopholes if they really wanted to. And in the end nato made the rules, nato can change them. Their risk assesment clearly asumed the rest of the world wouldn't really care, they already had to reases their risk profile multiple times. Just part of a ongoing conflict.

@grantcox4764 it is just the media overkill. Russia taking 2 houses every day is presented like russia is overrunning the country to some people. Realisticly it would take centuries at this rate for them to take over ukraine. It is also convenient to focus on that particularly since for the rest russia isn't doing so well. They are winning the current battle at the moment, but are losing the greater war. Partly because they are winning this battle. But like the saying goes, you can win a battle and still lose the war.

@devilsolution9781 if they where satisfied they would stop the war. So that's just plain BS. Russia is pooring so many resources into this single battle that it is japordising their greater war effort, bakhmut very likely will be the thing that lost russia the war, even if they manage to take it for a few weeks. If russia went to war an economy.. if putin could he probably already would have. But he can't. He is walking on eggshells just recruiting the amount of people he is currently while propping up greater society as much he can so peoples lives are impacted as little as possible. A war economy would negativly impact everybody, and not just economically. It would mean the end of putins reign. And then even if he would somehow manage to do that, it would also mean a NATO intervention. Something russia isn't remotely able to manage as things are currently. And on the longer term europes fiscal and industrial capabilities alone vastly outmatch russia even without the USA, so even there they would be disadvantaged. Putin bit off much more then he is able to chew and is stuck between a rock and a hard place with very little room to manouvre to come out of this with his position surviving this mistake. Probably also the reason they are full in on bakhmut, as it is his only realistic oppertunity to take a win in this war big enough that can be used to claim all objectives have been reached and on which he can declare victory with any chance to sell it to the public as anything other then a massive failure. And then victimise himself by blaming ukraine for wanting to keep fighting. That is the current reality in this conflict. And if ukraine manages to deny him bakhmut as well, putins life will become extremely difficult. Then there is ukraines comming offensive. Unlike russia, ukraine has been training on how to efficiently break or circumvent defences, how to properly conduct combined arms and how to keep momentum going. If succesful it can neutralise the strength russia's entire army depends on, it's artillery. Without it's artillery russia's army basicly falls apart. And not only because of morale and lack of proper training. Things could move extremely quickly if ukraine is able to gain momentum this spring.

@UmBungo what declaration of independence should be recognised? The one of chechnia, or the one of moldova, maybe gorgian independence? Those are the ones not provoked by russian secret services.

It could only be made to only concern ukrainian held territory. Basicly blocking russia from ever advancing again or retaking whatever they lose.

It is actually not to have contested territory. And ukrainian territory isn't contested. It is legally ukrainian. They just have people trying to steal their property.
