While the use of pepper spray is a non-lethal measure to ensure compliance, its application must be proportionate and governed by logic, not emotion. If the individual presents an immediate threat to public safety or the officer, the action may be justifiable. However, reliance on force as a first response reflects a failure in communication and de-escalation tactics, which should always be prioritized to maintain a civilized society.
The effects of pepper spray or bear spray on the human eyes are severe and immediate. The capsaicin compound induces an intense burning sensation, temporary blindness, and excessive tearing. This response, while designed to incapacitate a potential threat, demonstrates the vulnerability of human sensory organs. It would be prudent to mitigate exposure through protective equipment or avoidance of such irritants.
Excellent police work. The criminals spray might have been more lethal, possibly bear spray.
Excellent citizenship work by the carrying civilian providing water to the severely weakened officer. Depending on what the criminal was using permanent eye damage is possible.
