Its actually encouraged to take them out to the real world in many places as just rotting in a house is not good for them mentally. I dont know about the elderly, but its definitely the case for mentally disabled people. Its good for them. Shopping is a normal place to go to as it does not cost the home money and it gives them real world experience. I used to do that job as a late teen early 20 something. Other places we would go would be to the bowling alley, or to parks. Some even have "jobs" like organizing recycling and then we would take them to the recycling center and they could keep the money they earned and use it for stuff... usually McDonalds... Now obviously the abuse is wrong, but I just dont want you thinking that its bad to bring them out in public. Thats a very medieval viewpoint.
