  1. The Ukrainian are fighting a static fight from trenches against an enemy who has good observation and artillery superiority plus air dominance and the results are predictable. The last thing the Ukrainian want to do is fight from trenches in a static fight they're handing themselves to the Russian artillery. They had success earlier in the war because they were fighting a mobile stealthy fight and unfortunately they have let their egos get the better of them and have lost so many of their most experienced soldiers.

The Russians aren't better than western military the Ukrainian are fighting with a lot of limitations and have given the Russians hell. The US military with it's far greater firepower than the Ukrainian have would have devasted the Russians even worse. The Russians couldn't even defeat an air force they out numbered 10-1. The US has a far bigger more effective airforce far greater supplies of presision artillery and MLRS and far superior deep strike capability than the Ukrainian military and they would be combining it all when they conducted operations.

Technology advances over the years but war doesn't actually change that much you take away the drones and this war in Ukraine is like a throw back to world war two

  41. What you Russian fanboys dont seem to understand is that the Ukrainian have the option of transitioning to an insurgency any time they want. They have the ability to continue targetting and destroying the best Russian armoured vehicles with drones that cost a few hundred dollars. They have longer range drones that can target russian airfields they also have the ability to shoot down Russian helicopter gunships. The Ukrainian are constantly developing their maritime drones which are going to get increasingly dangerous for the russian navy. Then you have the Ukrainian snipers that are excellent. Unless the Russians can break the will of the Ukrainian people to resist the war is going to drag on for years and russians are going to continue dying and getting maimed and equipment will continue to be destroyed with the cost of the war going into the trillions. Ukraine will become a burial ground for the Russian military.

The US faces Russian artillery they would use a combination of guided and unguided artillery that's why ammunition production had been ramped up. They have the Excalibur precision munitions then they also have kits that they can put on dumb shells to make them precision rounds and they're cheaper than a Excalibur round. And some targets aren't valuable enough to use a precision round. The Russians struggled to deal with 20 HIMARS units the US has close to 400 then you add all the M777 and Paladin that can fire precision munitions which will be backed up with airpower and other long rang fire capabilities plus superior surveillance the Ukrainian firepower pales in comparison to what the US military could unleash.

As for the explosions being spectacular yeah explosions tend to be spectacular and we have seen plenty of spectacular explosions when Russian ammunition got hit. HIMARS didn't play a minor role they were destroying Russian command and control centres with it and ammunition dumps and the Russians were crying about HIMARS so you know it was having a good effect. The Russians have struggled with a Ukrainian military that has no where near the firepower or situational awareness of the US military it's obvious what would happen if they had to face the full force of the US. The Russians would have been pushed out of Ukraine already they would have had to use nukes which ultimately would have resulted in the destruction of everyone

It's still buying time for forces in the south to prepare positions and receive vital equipment. If you look back to world war two no one was able to conduct a successful offensive against a well armed entrenched enemy without air support.

How long do you stay there 30 years,50 years? They couldn't control rural areas because they couldn't see their enemy and everyone including the Russians had the same problem. Korea ended up in a stalemate with both sides ready to end the war and ultimately the communists were pushed out and South Korea was saved. The communists were pushed out by allied ground forces not airpower because in the ground attack role the airpower was limited in what it could do because they couldn't see the enemy. At the Chosin Reservoir the US Marines were out numbered 6-1 and fought off the Chinese and air support was limited . In Vietnam the American ground forces still had to engage enemy forces in close quarters battle because at times the enemy was so close airpower couldn't be used. Later in the year Fallujah had become such a problem the Iraqi government gave the US the green light to clear it out and they did. They didn't flatten the buildings with airpower they were all intact when they went in. The marines and army units went in with armoured vehicle support and cleared it out building by building. The fighting was infantry intensive supported by artillery.

They wouldn't even put in ground forces to cut of the Ho che min trail. I read an interview with a North Vietnamese general about 20 years ago and he said after the Tet offensive the Viet Cong virtually ceased to exist it took them a couple of years to get over the losses and if the US had stepped up the pressure in 1969 they would have struggled to answer but in 1969 the US started pulling troops out of Vietnam because the public were turning against the war. The Vietnamese general also said if the US had committed ground forces to cut off the Ho che Min trail the North could never have won the war but US politicians again wouldn't allow the military to do it. The Korean war ended in a draw the original goal of the operation to secure South Korea was achieved. The US military at the end of world war 2 was cut back dramatically when the war broke out in Korea they weren't the army of world war 2 and weren't ready for a war of that magnitude the anti tank weapons US troops had couldn't even penetrate the armour of the russian tanks that North Korea was using. The US army had to learn a lot of lessons and things started to turn around when General Ridgeway took control. When the Chinese entered the war they used numbers of men as a weapon throwing masses at an objective which the US countered with artillery. Air power was limited in its effectiveness in the ground attack role because the Chinese infantry couldn't be spotted easily from the air they could blend into the terrain. The commonwealth forces offered some support but the bulk of the effort still came from the Americans. As far as the Ukraine war goes Russia has performed poorly Russians try to make themselves look good by hyping up NATO involvement but the reality only a tiny portion of equipment has been provided to Ukraine and a lot of it was old equipment nearing the end of it's life. Ukraine has shown themselves to be tough committed soldiers but they are fighting with some big limitations they have a small airforce and have limited numbers of SAM systems they don't have enough to protect their civilian infrastructure and their forward military units. They also have limited amphibious capability and mine clearing ability. The russian military has every advantage and is fighting a conventional war where they can see their enemy and they still can't achieve a decisive outcome.

The US were flying at a very high tempo so losses were going to mount up but they still only averaged 0.4 losses per thousand sorties. You keep saying Ukraine has received more funding than the NVA but the western equipment Ukraine has received is a lot more expensive to produce than the tech that was available in the 60's.   285. The Donbas was always going to be lost. At the beginning of the war the Ukrainian forces were fighting like well armed mobile insurgents and were able to ambush hitting and running they weren't a static force. In the Donbas they have gone static fighting from fixed positions in trenches that can be seen from the air and pounded with artillery and airstrikes. They have allowed the Russians to concentrate their artillery on targets and bludgeon them. They can't match the Russian artillery for every round they fire they get 10-20 back their positions come under such heavy fire they can either stay there and get bludgeoned or withdraw giving up the ground. Even if they fight bravely holding russian frontal attacks the Ukrainian flanks can't with stand the Russian artillery and break which comprises their whole frontline they have no choice but to withdraw or get cut off. The Ukrainian should go back to fighting like well armed stealthy mobile insurgents hitting and running looking to continuously inflict casualties on the Russians while not providing big static targets for the Russians to pound with artillery. It will be interesting to see what tactics the Ukrainian use after the Donbas is lost the separatist forces won't have the strength to hold the whole Donbas themselves so there will need to be tens of thousands of Russians stationed there permanently. They will have to set up bases which will be vulnerable to HIMARS and M270 MLRS plus their supply convoys will also be vulnerable to ambush. Holding and controlling the Donbas could prove harder for the Russians than capturing it.

Casualties are heavy on both sides the Russians tried an attack yesterday they had air support and still got a beating. One foreign Legion unit of around 30 men got ambushed and suffered 80% casualties that hasn't been happening to the foreign Legion across the whole unit.

The only way the war could be won was to go to Hanoi and take out the regime but the US wasn't prepared to put ground forces into North Vietnam. In Afghanistan 75-80% of the Afghan soldiers were drug users and illiterate building an effective army from that quality of manpower was impossible so the failure of the operation in Afghanistan was inevitable. The vietnamese forces were not just a bunch of rice farmers they had their conventional military and then they had the Viet Cong guerillas. The north Vietnamese conventional forces were well equipped with the latest Russian equipment on the ground and in the air. They had tanks artillery and modern surface-to-air missile systems from Russia and they also had a small air force equipped with MIGs from Russia.

  409. I have said from the start of the war it was vital the Ukrainian got the switch blade 600 and prioritize its use against russian artillery. The switch blade 600 can fly 80km in one direction or fly 40 KM in 20 mins then loiter for 20 mins looking for a target. It also has a warhead like the javelin and can destroy vehicles as big as main battle tanks. It can fly day or night and has an electric motor which makes it very quiet. Ukraine probably takes 80-90% of their casualties from russian artillery so it was vital that something was done about it and trying to compete gun for gun shell for shell isn't the way to go. As far as I'm concerned using weapons like switch blade 600 to target russian artillery is a no brainer it's hard to believe it hasn't happened.

  523. You're right the Ukraine effort will change to an insurgency at some point and the Russians will find themselves getting picked off and they won't be able to use massed artillery fire because the enemy won't be in front of them.

  524.  @jbyeats  The US fought the same way in Afghanistan they didn't lay waste to cities. The Russians arn't fighting softly they are using massed artillery fire to flatten villages in the east and they did the same in the villages around Kiev. They didn't want to carpet bomb Kiev because they knew they could end up in a Stalingrad style fight.

It wasn't hard to capture Kerson because it wasn't fought for As for encircling the Ukrainian military you can't do that slowly inching forward you have to move at speed with armoured vehicles at the tip of the spear to conduct a successful operation of that type The Ukrainian have good situational awareness the US is giving them daily updates on russian troop positions. The war is going to last probably for years it was never going to end quickly for either side and from day one I have waited for the Ukrainians to transition to an insurgency at some point. The Russians will have no more success beating an insurgency in Ukraine than they did in Afghanistan

The war isn't going to end quickly it's going to be a long drawn out war with the Ukrainian fighting an insurgency and the Russians will lose just like in Afghanistan

  533. Russia hasn't won they can capture ground but can they break the will of Ukrainian people to resist if they can't they will end up facing a long drawn out insurgency and Russians will keep dying.

If a conventional war ends the insurgency starts and the Ukranian can destroy Russian tanks and artillery with $500 dollar drones and do so faster than Russia can build them.

  538.  @Neosapiant  i know plenty about them and their performance in Ukraine has been embarrassing against a military who could match them in the air and had long range fire capabilities like artillery, MLRS,ground to ground missiles, the Russian military will get trashed. The only reason they are having any success in Ukraine is because the Ukrainian have no long range fire capabilities so the Russian artillery has pretty much a free licence to just pound ukraine positions. Take out the Russian artillery they're nothing.
