The Russians take the Donbas it doesn't mean they control the Donbas. They will end up facing an insurgency and russian soldiers will just die everyday until they leave.

Fight an insurgency they have the weapon systems to do it. Be nimble and don't stand in front of your enemy where they can pound you with artillery. Hit and run everyday killing your enemy until their people at home decide it's not worth it.
