I remember how often pro-Ukrainian commentators repeated that the advances of Russian forces this winter were insignificant. Pro-Russian commentators are probably saying the same thing about Ukrainian forces advancing in the summer.
For me, the point was to break through the fortified lines before the rain, so that Russia doesn't spend another winter building more defenses to make it look like this land is theirs. Is that still possible? Hardly as it looks from afar.
But war is not just a matter of territory drawn on a map. As you say, it's also a matter of attrition, economics, morale, demographics, politics, and many other factors.
It would be nice to put it all into perspective with clear statistical graphs of the most important indicators.
Will Russia be able to conquer more land after this? Hardly.
Not to mention that it's harder in the mud.
What I see is Russia with much more resources on proper, wasting much more. This whole operation is a waste. The idea of attacking friends is a call for waste. How much can Russia waste?
It's extremely stupid to waste, but since stupidity is an option for absolute extremists and Russia still has a lot to waste, how much more? How much more before there is nothing left ?
