They even killed genuine communists while pretending to do everything for communism. The Kremlin was supportive of the remote communist organisations who could serve them, not those who could influence the Kremlin in return. Nobody killed communist ideas better than Stalin. He managed to make the word "communism" synonym of "brutal dictatorship" , and even the US propaganda helped him by buying the lie that Russia was communist, to the point people can't freely thing about it today because they believe to already know. Some even believe the issue was communism and not just extreme nationalism. You can take any ideology and make it horrible with extreme nationalism. Communism was a mere excuse, just like socialism was for National-sozialismus. You could do the same with capitalism, or any religion. National-Capitalismus or National-Buddism could be just as bad if enough madmen started to believe it's worth killing for it. It's just a flavor, a decoration, not the issue.
