  2. Great stuff as always. The Black Death effectively ended the feudal system in England. Why suffer a Lord of the Manor when the Lord in the next village was offering better wages and conditions due to labour shortages. The ruling classes of England never forgot this and have used varied means to contain the peasantry ever since.

  3. I grew up in the North of England and would carve what we called "turnips". These days they are called swedes and turnips are much smaller whitish root vegetables. The other Halloween traditions in the North were apple-bobbing, either from apples held on a string or trying to eat apples bobbing in a bowl of water.

  4. Dera History Guy, another great episode, but it is making me hungry. I may try the salted potaoes this weekend. As an aside the creators of "Banoffee Pie" Nigel Mackenzie and Ian Dowding allegedly never claimed copyright as they felt it was a gift to the world. Which then reminds me of John Innes who developed composts, but again declined copyright for the same reason. Maybe an episode of people who declined copyright for the greater good?   7. Great stuff THC. I am definitely a fan of yours. Never underestimate the incompetence of the British Civil Service. The Bletchley computer, sharing jet engine knowledge of the jet engine with the Soviets, cancelling TSR2 and CVA 01. Their ineptitude is boundless.
